temi coker explaining the ins and outs of designing for large clients on The Bearded Tog podcast

Designing for Larger Clients and Inspiration

Temi Coker, conveying authentic experiences through his photography work, has helped him design for larger clients and share his inspiration. Temi’s work ethic and creativity started with his life in Nigeria, where the most incredible thing about their culture is that they make things happen with what they have. He has worked with companies like Apple, Google, Twitter, HBO, Instagram, and AT&T.

  • Pick either design or photography because you can’t do both. That’s what people said to Temi early on in his career.
  • His superpower comes in the form of merging photography and design.
  • This creativity pushed him to utilize tools in unconventional ways and to experiment.
  • Find that passion project that you want to work on and share with people. But he says not to do it for money and don’t do it because you want X and X clients to see it. Be proud of your work if the client sees it or they don’t.
  • “Our skin was not a mistake…we decided to really be unapologetically black.” Black history is not just a month or a day; it’s every day. – Temi teams up with Jess Sims and Chelsea Jackson at Peloton designing workout wear that celebrates black history.
  • Having an agent is excellent; they know the industry and help clarify the scope of the project.
  • Agents are particularly beneficial with larger clients. Just be mindful if the agencies want you to sign a contract and see how long that contract will last.
  • Temi’s process? If you’re uninspired, don’t do it. If you’re inspired, then start making things.

Be sure to listen to this episode now with Temi Coker as he talks about where his inspiration comes from and what it’s like designing for larger clients!
