It’s always a little intimidating to have your picture taken, even if it’s just a photo on an iPhone that is taken by a friend, we still want to look nice, make sure nothing is in our teeth and that our hair (or beard!) is behaving. I realize that preparing for your engagement session can be a little nerve-wracking, so here are some things I’ve learned over the years from photographing many engagement sessions in DC.

I have no doubt we’ll create some great, colorful and fun photos. I know we’ve covered so much during the initial consultation and emails, as well as the Wedding Guide but I send this to all my clients to ensure we’re on the same page for the shoot. I am extremely laid back, but also want you guys to both look and feel good, so here are a few general tips to make sure you guys feel as comfortable as possible during the shoot. 🙂

1) Please make proper considerations for traffic & fashion emergencies when it comes to being on time. I’m super laid back and seldom watch the clock, but I always want to maximize the time we have together. Sessions are mostly for photos, but also for us to work together a bit before so you’re super comfortable come wedding time. An average shoot lasts 1-2 hours…if you show up 30 minutes late, the session is not extended, but, rather, ends at the regularly scheduled time. I want the BEST photography experience for you. And being on time achieves exactly this! Bonus: I also schedule the engagement session time typically to put you guys in light that will make you look your best, and that light only lasts so long.

2) Be sure to check out the blog for engagement sessions before the shoot! I’ve also discovered that when the prospective groom views other grooms through photos in advance, it helps him feel comfortable in front of the camera. In my experience, women have been more comfortable with being a model or what I lovingly refer to as “work-it” in front of the camera. Gentlemen, on the other hand, are sometimes not. However, if they see some of my images and poses beforehand, they know that I’m only there to make them look extra handsome. 3) Don’t hesitate to check out photo shoot locations beforehand. If something else has popped up or inspiration strikes, please don’t hesitate to share that with me. I encourage you to find a place where you both feel comfortable. And please note that there is no such thing as an ‘ugly’ location….there is beauty everywhere….and I’m an expert at finding it. Most of the time, the light is more important than the location.

Lastly, I’ve shot pretty much around every location and look imaginable (dumpsters, other countries, graffiti walls, etc), so please know that the location doesn’t necessarily have to be pretty at every corner 🙂

4) I want every engagement shoot to reflect your personalities and what matters to you. Some couples bring a prop or something that does that while others want to eliminate extra variables and just bring themselves. No pressure either way but please let me know in advance what you’re bringing whether it be a prop, pet, or otherwise.

5) Many couples will have their practice run regarding hair and makeup for the engagement shoot. This helps them feel a little more ‘done-up’ for the shoot but is optional. However, what I can say is that in my experience shooting engagement sessions, everyone wants to feel pretty and confident…and sometimes spending a little extra time getting ready achieves just that. That said, don’t overdo it! My colorful style of photography brings out the color and look of everyone so sometimes things that look good to our eyes may be too much in photos or feel unnatural in photos.

Engagement Session Frequently Asked Questions:

We’re not professional models, how does posing work?

I’ve never photographed a professional model, don’t sweat it! Most of my direction is very simple and usually represents something you guys may do anyway whether it’s a gentle kiss on the forehead or looking out over a cool view. If something’s uncomfortable during your session, please let me know and we can move on to something that feels right for you! Also, I usually play off of you and let your own personality show through. The more comfortable you feel, the more authentic your photos.

Should I bring anything?

If you’d like, you can bring powder to help eliminate any shine on the skin, lipstick, and hairspray for any flyaway hairs. This is totally optional though if you’re more laid back or don’t want to carry as much.

I think that’s it for now, but please feel free to contact me should anything else arise. Again, I’m so excited and I can’t wait to photograph you guys!
