Swimwear and Fashion with Joey Wright

Ever wonder what swimwear and fashion photography is like? Joey Wright Photo out of Miami is the absolute master. The best part? He’s friendly, fun, and photographs models without being creepy which is a great skill!

In this episode Joey Wright tells his story of how his odd jobs and college education molded him along the journey to becoming a photographer. Now he’s full-time in Miami Florida and shooting for brands like Ignite, Sports Illustrated, and more!

Notes from Joey

  • When starting out in fashion photography, you have to realize that your portfolio is very much a reflection of the whole team you’re working with.  As the photographer, you are the ring leader making all the calls.  If the makeup or model isn’t high quality, it will ultimately be your responsibility to guide the shoot in the direction you want it to go.
  • Record expenses from the very beginning!  Even if it’s starting out as a “hobby”, if you plan to make money you want to keep track of what you’re spending and making from your business.
  • It’s one thing to have a good portfolio, it’s another thing to be consistent.  If you want people to hire you year after year and plan the shoots around YOUR schedule, you have to produce consistent swimwear and fashion work.
  • Joey doesn’t make his companies contract him for multiple shoots at a time.  That way, when he gets repeat business, he knows they loved him and he knocked it out of the park!
  • Everyone prices commercial photography differently.  Make a pricing page and ask for lots of info.  That way, you’ll be able to make custom quotes for each project.
  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew.  Learn to say no.  Protect your time.  If you say yes to too much, you’ll begin to resent photography and not enjoy it anymore.
