What to Wear For Engagement Photos: Outfit Ideas

It’s always a little intimidating to have your picture taken, even if it’s just a photo on an iPhone that is taken by a friend, we still want to look nice, make sure nothing is in our teeth and that our hair (or beard!) is behaving. I realize that preparing for your engagement session can be a little nerve-wracking, so here are some tips on what to wear for engagement photos that will make preparation a little more manageable. Also, there are some photos of engagement photo outfit ideas and inspiration too!

You don’t have to match.

Try to pick out engagement photo outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. If everyone wore the same exact color at their engagement shoot, how boring would those images be? Long gone are the days of wearing khaki pants and white shirts on the beach. Also, these images are going to represent who you are in 10-20 years during this time in your lives and you probably don’t match every day, so make sure you spend time on this.

Don’t be afraid to be BOLD!

Accessorize and make your outfits your own. Scarves, bold necklaces, and fun shoes are always welcomed! Most patterns are actually OK, however, graphics are not favorable for portraits. If you’re wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting. Feel free to send your over outfit ideas if you need help.

Mix up your outfits.

For my engagement sessions, most couples like to have one casual, everyday outfit and then one outfit that is more formal or fancy. This will give your shoot two totally different looks and it’s awesome! I usually recommend the partner who loves fashion a little more dress first, then the other one coordinating based off of that. If you’d rather play it low-key, you can opt for just one outfit. Some couples have even had swimsuits as their second outfits!

#ProTip: Make sure you’re comfortable with what you are wearing! If you feel good, you’ll look good. Comfort and confidence go a long way!

Empty your pockets.

Literally. You don’t want to have keychains or phones showing through your pockets. If you’re rocking heels for part of the shoot, bring some ats or sandals for when we’re walking around. As I always say “you’re only allowed one bulge on shoots 😂”

Relax!

You don’t have to be a pro at this! I’m going to help you along the way and it’s going to be a blast. Enjoy this time together and make a date out of it. We usually go out for a drink, apps or pizza after sessions to celebrate again!

BE ON TIME.

The sun is only out for so long. The later you arrive, the less time you and your photographer will have to shoot. How does this relate to outfit? Your photographer has chosen the time that you two will look your best!
