Balancing a Full Time Job with Freelance

Balancing a Full Time Job with Freelance

Trying to figure out the ins and outs of balancing a full time job with freelance? It can be challenging and you can feel overwhelmed. Should you take all the extra work you can get, or do you keep it at a limit so you also have time with your family.?

In this episode of The Bearded Tog, we welcome back guest Keith Lee. Besides photographing 30 weddings and engagements a year, plus boudoir photography sessions, he also has a full time job, and a wife and children to take care of!  You can totally rock balancing a full time job with freelance!

Keith’s Takeaways

  • There never is a perfect “balance”. One week, he puts more focus on his photography business, and then next week he’ll put more focus on his full time job.
  • It can be difficult to turn down additional freelance work, especially if it’s a personal referral. Keith and his wife decided that certain weekends, would always be unavailable for weddings, and that they must have at least one free weekend each month.  You have to set boundaries when balancing a full time job with freelance.
  • Even if you have a regular job to pay the bills, it’s still important to keep track of your side hustle money so you don’t get lulled into thinking you have more than you actually do.
  • The advice Keith would have given himself ten years ago is this: Make the same amount of money you did last year or work less. Don’t do work for cheap just to do it.
