One of the things I love about this job is that almost 99% of the time I’m photographing joy. When Alexa was planning her epic same-sex proposal at the Lincoln Memorial, I knew there’d be some huge smiles and some fun. How could we pull off a surprise proposal at the beginning of a pandemic, at one of the most popular memorials in Washington DC?
Alexa and Cassie run the incredible @TwoFemmeGems Instagram account, so these two are used to casual photoshoots! So when Alexa was pitching it to Cassie, she simply told her they were planning one of their normal photoshoots with a photographer from Instagram.
When we met, it felt like any other normal photoshoot. I introduced myself (we only knew each other from Instagram) and walked them through some instruction, posing, and scoping out unique spots around the Lincoln. Alexa and I had planned to make our way up to the Lincoln, so we shot our way up there (a mix of walking and shooting, taking breaks in between). Once we got to “the spot” I asked if I could take a portrait of each of them. “We all need new photos of us every once in a while!” I said.
I shot Alexa first (to hopefully throw off any chance of Cassie knowing), then Cassie while Alexa prepared the ring. Then I shot Alexa and asked Cassie to join back in. When Cassie wasn’t looking, Alexa got down on one knee and BAM proposed right there overlooking the Washington Monument!
Cassie said YES!
Tears flowed, smiles stretched an extra 10% than normal, and the embracing, hugs, and kisses were all a little bit more special after these two went from dating to engaged.
I don’t shoot proposals often but these two have become good friends since this epic day and I can’t wait for their wedding next year! For now here are a few of my favorites from Alexa & Cassie’s same-sex proposal at the Lincoln Memorial!
