Lindsey Roman on Destination Wedding Photography Bearded Tog Podcast

Destination Photography with Lindsey Roman

To get into destination photography, you need to do more than just put “Passport ready for travel!” on your instagram bio. Before people will pay for your travel, you’ll probably have to go to those destinations and take photos.

In this episode of The Bearded Tog Podcast, I’m joined by Lindsey Roman to talk about how she changed her business in less than two years to become a highly successful destination wedding photographer, and how to treat your social media as a billboard for the types of wedding you want to be hired for.

As a bonus, we also discuss which boyfriend Taylor Swift should have stayed with. It’s a fun episode, and I hope you enjoy it!

Lindsey’s Tips for Getting Into Destination Photography and Destination Weddings

  • To become a destination wedding photographer you must become a photographer, and then go travel. You have to travel first and take photos at the locations you want people to hire you for.
  • To start photographing couples in the outdoor locations she wanted while living in Kentucky, Lindsey would plan weekend trips with her husband to epic looking locations in the midwest, and post a “Couple Call” on social media, asking if anyone wanted to do a photo session in that place. Some she got paid for and some were free, but the main point was building a portfolio and having photos to post of the types of places she wanted to go.
  • Lindsey built up her instagram presence by making sure she used all of the 30 hashtags for each post, and picked location/wedding specific ones that matched what potential brides would be searching for.
  • She blogged each session and also optimized her SEO on those posts to be location and wedding or elopement based.
  • Make sure your wedding content is on Pinterest, because that’s a place brides use to search for information and inspiration.
  • Lindsey shows her authentic self, complete with her bouncy and bubbly personality on instagram stories. She loves stories because it’s  a place for people to connect, break down a a barrier, and feel like they know the person.
  • No matter what stage of business you are in, you will get weddings that don’t fit the look you want to be known for. Do your best work for that couple, but you don’t have to post their images in your website or social media. Your instagram is there for YOUR marketing, and it’s okay to be specific about what you share.
  • If you want to be something, start calling yourself that, and go out and become it.
  • Think of your client interaction in terms of the Hero’s Journey story type. The key to remember is that you are not the hero! Your client is the hero, and you are the helper that assists them in reaching their goal.
